Boundary Conditions at the Heliospheric Termination Shock with Pickup Ions

چکیده
In a collisionless shock the directed flow energy is converted mainly in thermal of plasma species. At termination (TS) substantial portion goes into heating pickup ions (PUIs), while solar wind protons (SW) weaker than it would be without PUI. Heating both species nonadiabatic. Downstream pressure mixture determined by conservation laws for whole mixture. SW sensitive to details front, PUI not. The profile an analytical approximation observed TS. Here downstream temperature and PUIs are obtained first time using test particle analysis model various magnetic compression ratios angles. results used balance equation corresponding estimated. supported full simulations, except that was not studied data due its apparent dependence on fine structure front.

Impact of Pickup Ions on the Shock Front Nonstationarity and Energy Dissipation of the Heliospheric Termination Shock: Two-dimensional Full Particle Simulations and Comparison with Voyager 2 Observations
Voyager 2 (V2) observed multiple crossings of the heliospheric termination shock (TS) on 2007 August 31– September 1 at a distance of 84 AU from the Sun. Here, for the first time, we present two-dimensional particle-incell (PIC) simulations of the TS self-consistently including pickup ions (PUIs), and compare the simulation results with V2 observations. We find that (1) PUIs play a key role in ...
متن کاملRemote diagnostic of the heliospheric termination shock using neutralized post shock pick-up ions as messengers
Hydrogen pick-up ions when produced in the inner heliosphere are convected outwards with the solar wind and are accelerated by nonlinear wave-particle interactions. Upon their arrival at the solar wind termination shock the highest percentage of them passes over from the preshock to the postshock plasma regime. At this occasion these ions suffer a characteristic change in their density and velo...
متن کاملDirect Acceleration of Pickup Ions at the Solar Wind Termination Shock: the Production of Anomalous Cosmic Rays
We have modeled the injection and acceleration of pickup ions at the solar wind termination shock and investigated the parameters needed to produce the observed Anomalous Cosmic Ray (ACR) fluxes. A non-linear Monte Carlo technique was employed, which in effect solves the Boltzmann equation and is not restricted to near-isotropic particle distribution functions. This technique models the injecti...
متن کاملMotion of the heliospheric termination shock 3. Incident interplanetary shocks
In this paper the response of the heliospheric termination shock to an incident interplanetary shock is examined. This paper is an extension of a recent study by Barnes (1993), which treated the analogous problem for an incident contact discontinuity. The termination shock is treated as a strong gasdynamic shock. The postinteraction configuration consists of a moving termination shock, a postsh...
متن کاملSearch for the Heliospheric Termination Shock (TS) and Heliosheath (HS)
Voyager 1 continues to measure the very distant Heliospheric Magnetic Field (HMF) beyond 95 AU at ~35 North latitude. The MAG instrument data covers more than a full 22 years solar magnetic cycle. The magnitude of the observed HMF is well described, on average, by Parker's Archimedean spiral structure if due account is made for time variations of the source field strength and solar wind velocit...
